Successful switch from oil to biomass heating

Home owner, Jonathan Foster, has benefitted from the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme after renovating and extending his home.

BTM044_crop.jpgMr Foster lives in a large detached character property in Bedfordshire, and recently undertook an extensive renovation project, also building an extension to create a large kitchen/dining room. He took the opportunity to replace the old oil boiler with a BioWIN 2 biomass boiler from Windhager, which is 94.4% efficient and provides all the heating and hot water to the property. The installation included under-floor heating in the kitchen, and radiators elsewhere, as well as an underground GeoTANK, for storing biomass pellets in bulk and feeding them into the boiler using a vacuum suction system. It was supplied and installed by Plumb-Line, an MCS and HETAS registered company. The installation qualified for the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), a government scheme to encourage take-up of renewable energy.

Significant return
Plumb-Line’s surveyor, Lee Watt, assessed the property to produce an Energy Performance Certificate and Green Deal Advice Report. RHI returns were calculated for the five-bedroom home at the tariff level of 0.122 per kWh, which applied at the time of registration. RHI payments were important in Mr Foster’s decision on whether the installation would be financially feasible.

Mr Foster was speculating that he would also save money on his fuel bills, as pellets for his high efficiency biomass boiler will cost less than he was previously paying for oil. However, he added: “Not having oil in the house was an important factor in my decision. There is no longer the unpleasant smell of oil from both its storage and combustion.”

Straightforward process
Mr Foster said: “The Renewable Heat Incentive was definitely important for me when deciding to switch to biomass heating. However, I was surprised how straightforward the application process was. Plumb-Line provided me with all the documentation that I needed and the online application was easy. I then had to send a few documents in the post and confirmation that my application had been successful arrived 2-3 days later. I was quite impressed.” He added: “The team at Plumb-Line did an excellent job. They were very knowledgeable and flexible, fitting in around other parts of the project. I have already recommended them based on my experience.”
